Additional Services

Sacred Openings' owner, birth and postpartum doula, Kayla Brookins, massaging a mom's feet during her Mother Blessing Ceremony, while her family and friends massage her hands and head.

Blessingway Ritual

Also called a Mother Blessing or Blessingway Ceremony, a Blessingway Ritual is a sacred gathering of your closest family and friends in which you are honored, loved, supported, and cherished as a part of your emotional, mental, and spiritual preparation for labor. This is sometimes called a "baby shower for the mother/birthing parent," where all the focus is on you and your journey.

What does a Blessingway Ritual Entail?

We will begin by cleansing our energy fields with sacred smoke and calling in our Guides and Ancestors. We will then move through:

  • fear-releasing ritual

  • massage/loving touch for birthing parent

  • blessing of birthing parent

  • oracle card reading

  • labor necklace

  • water magic ritual

  • plant sweeping/brushing

  • protection bundle

  • birth art

Along with holding this ceremony space for you, I would take charge of the invitations, RSVPs, etc.

Closing of the Bones Ceremony

A closing of the bones ceremony is a practice of tightly wrapping a new parent in rebozos - traditional, woven, Mexican cloths - from head to toe. The tight binding provides a comforting, womb-like atmosphere into which the new parent can cocoon. Before the wrapping begins, the new parent is given the space to state what they are releasing from their pre-parenthood life and what they are stepping into in their new parent identity. The wrapping process itself includes rocking and tight squeezing of each section of the body. When they are fully wrapped, there is a period of pause, allowing the new parent to sink into the holding and step back into themselves. Then, the unwrapping process begins, and the new parent emerges as someone new.

Included in the ceremony:

  • herbal bath soak, using my specially curated blend

  • full-body massage

*Included in the Complete Package at no additional cost*

This ceremony can take 2-3 hours to complete.

Placenta Ceremony

This placenta ceremony is a time for letting go and for planting seeds. There is space to acknowledge that the cutting or falling away of the placenta is the first step of separation between baby and parent, and all emotions that come up around this are held lovingly, without judgement. There is also space given to write down and/or speak aloud what intentions you have as parents for your baby's life and what intentions you think your baby has for their life. These intentions are planted with your placenta to be nourished by the Earth to grow and bloom as your baby grows.

Personalization

This ritual is attuned to each family's situation and desires.

For the actual placenta, there are many ways to "plant" it:

  • whole, if you have no other plans for it

  • a piece, if you have it frozen

  • one capsule, if you have it encapsulated

  • your baby's cord stump, if you didn't save it at all, etc.

During the ritual, there are many options for personalization as well.

For the altar, I will bring certain objects, but you are encouraged to add whatever feels right:

  • pictures of your baby

  • crystals

  • meaningful objects

  • special incense

  • meaningful oracle deck, etc.

You also get to decide if your intentions will be written down or spoken aloud (or both), burned with the ashes buried with your placenta, or buried whole, etc.

Finally, you choose where you would like the planting to take place. It is very popular to think of burying your placenta under a tree, but you may choose a favorite bush or flower patch, by a significant stream, etc. If you have your placenta encapsulated, you have the option of planting it in a house plant.

Please note: If you do choose to bury your placenta whole, it must first be placed in a box or some kind of container, otherwise the high iron content will kill the surrounding plants.

Also note: Ceremony does not care about time. If you have your baby in the Winter, it is possible to have this ceremony in the Spring or Summer when the ground thaws. Similarly, if this ceremony calls to you, but your baby is now a toddler, child, teenager, or adult, you can still take the time and space to plant these seeds.
